Il est arrivé peu après 21 heures, décontracté dans sa veste rouge, les manches relevées et les yeux tombants sous ses cheveux bouclés. Il s'est isolé quelques instants pour échauffer, non pas sa voix, mais ses muscles. C'est qu'il n'est pas du genre statique, le zoulou blanc. Essayez un peu de danser comme lui, jambe par-dessus tête, et vous comprendrez. Un claquage et c'est le spectacle qui tombe à l'eau. Quatre musiciens et deux choristes l'accompagnaient sur scène. Les chansons ? « Des très vieilles et des très nouvelles », a annoncé Johnny Clegg dans un... très bon français. Ceux qui avaient perdu de vue le chanteur sud-africain depuis les années 90 l'ont retrouvé, fidèle à lui-même, énergique et combatif. « Faut pas baisser les bras », chante ce farouche opposant à l'apartheid. Et il montre l'exemple, les siens restant levés à chaque pas de danse tribale. À cinquante ans passés, Johnny Clegg reste le meilleur ambassadeur des dispersés de l'Afrique (traduction de Scatterlings of Africa).
